Pool Leak Detection
Pool leak detection is a specialised investigative process used to accurately locate and diagnose water loss from swimming pools and spas by systematically testing both the plumbing system and the structural components of the pool. Unlike simple visual inspections, professional leak detection involves a combination of advanced testing methods and specialised equipment designed to isolate each part of the pool system and determine exactly where water is escaping. The process typically begins with pressure testing of the pool’s plumbing lines, including suction lines, return jets, skimmer lines and cleaner lines, where the pipes are isolated and pressurised using calibrated gauges to confirm whether the underground pipework is holding pressure or experiencing loss. If a pressure drop is detected, further investigation using sensitive acoustic listening equipment allows technicians to trace the sound and vibration of escaping water through the pipework and surrounding ground, enabling the leak to be pinpointed with minimal excavation. In addition to plumbing testing, dye testing is performed throughout the pool structure by carefully releasing specialised leak detection dye near suspected areas such as skimmer boxes, return fittings, light niches, main drains, expansion joints and visible cracks in the pool shell; if a leak is present, the dye is naturally drawn toward the point where water is escaping, visually revealing the exact location of the fault. Throughout the investigation the pool equipment area, including pumps, filters, valves and associated pipework, is also carefully inspected to identify potential leaks occurring while the system is operating. By combining pressure testing, acoustic leak detection, dye tracing and structural analysis, pool leak detection allows technicians to accurately diagnose the source of water loss while avoiding unnecessary excavation or demolition, providing homeowners with a precise understanding of the problem and a clear pathway for effective repair.
